Classified Job Announcements.
Job announcements for classified positions are available on-line through
EDJOIN. Job seekers and employees are invited to review online job announcements and discuss employment or promotional possibilities with a staff member in Classified Personnel Services.
Classified Substitute Employment.
Job seekers available for immediate employment are encouraged to consider employment as a classified substitute employee. Classified substitutes are continuously assigned to fill in for regular employees who are absent due to illness, vacation, or leave, or to temporarily fill newly established or recently vacated positions.
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
The selection process for classified positions begins with the job announcement. The job announcement (known as "Classified Employment Opportunity") describes the position(s) according to the functions, responsibilities, typical duties, and salary assignment of the job classification.
Classified positions are announced according to job classification and each position is opened individually for the filing of applications. In most cases, examinations for each position will be conducted separately; however, in some cases examinations may be administered simultaneously.
CLASSIFIED EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION
Online applications are accepted when a job announcement is posted. It is very important that you take the following steps when applying:

Read the job announcement, giving special attention to filing requirements, final filing and examination dates, and minimum qualifications. Filing deadlines vary, so it is important to apply as soon as possible. The job announcement is your guide for successful filing of your application. Retain a copy of the job announcement until you complete the entire process.

Complete a classified employment application and attach any required supplement forms or questionnaires. When filling out the application, it is critical for you to demonstrate your ability to meet the minimum qualifications. Here are a few tips:
- Be specific, thorough, honest, and truthful.
- Do not leave any blanks.
- Be clear and concise (type or print neatly).
- Attach your resume; however, avoid using "see resume" as a method of filling out the application.
- Include any relevant volunteer experience.
- Attach additional sheets, if necessary, or any other material that supports your qualifications.
- Do not use co-workers, family members, or friends as references.
- If you are claiming Veteran's preference, attach a copy of your DD-214 form.
- Sign your application. (For on-line applications, make sure your name appears in the certification area.)

Submit all application materials before the filing deadline stated on the announcement. Do not submit original college degrees, licenses, certifications, or immigration papers. Make a copy of your application and any other materials before filing it with the Classified Personnel Services. Applications and supporting documents may not be returned or retrieved.
Following the application deadline, Classified Personnel Services will contact you within 10 business days regarding the status of your application. If you are notified that you qualify for the test, you should begin preparing for the examination.
EXAMINATIONS
Classified Personnel Services administers examinations, designed specifically for each job classification, which test the knowledge, ability and the skill levels required for successful job performance. Examinations may include one or more of the following components:

Written Examination. Enables applicants to demonstrate their technical and/or general job knowledge. Written examinations typically include items such as multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions.

Qualifications Appraisal Interview (Oral Panel). A panel of qualified professionals asks each candidate a series of job-related questions. Candidates are rated based on the responses communicated to the panel.

Performance Exercise. May either place the candidate in simulated work situation and/or use a subject matter expert to rate the candidate as job-related activities are performed. A performance exercise may involve typing a letter, preparing a financial worksheet, planning and scheduling a meeting, or identifying tools and equipment used in the job.
Reasonable accommodation will be made to facilitate the participation of disabled candidates in the examination process. If you qualify to take the examination, please notify staff member, noted in the job announcement, prior to the date of the examination of any special needs you may have. ELIGIBILITY LIST
After you have successfully passed the examination(s), your name will be placed on the eligibility list for that particular job classification. This list is used to fill vacancies in the job classification for the specific period of time indicated on the list.
Depending on the classification, the eligibility list will remain on file and active for a period of six months or one year. Separate lists are established for each job classification or for positions in the same classification located at work sites throughout the county.
Candidates are placed (ranked) on an eligibility list, in descending order, according their final scores. Candidates with equal final scores (ties) are given the same rank.
SELECTION INTERVIEWS
When a vacancy occurs, the hiring department will request a list of candidates (eligibles) from Classified Personnel Services. At which time, Classified Personnel Services will forward the first three ranks of candidates to the hiring department for a final interview.
Upon receiving the list, the hiring department will contact the candidates on the list to schedule a final selection interview appointment. It is most important that candidates respond to the request for an interview even if they are no longer interested in, or available to consider employment. Unresponsive candidates may be eliminated from the eligibility list and, in addition, may damage their future possibilities for obtaining employment with the Office.
Those candidates that continue to be interested in employment are expected to arrive to their respective interview at the time (and date) scheduled. Please avoid canceling or rescheduling your interview.
