​This is the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) list for the Credential Services Department. It provides answers to commonly asked questions about fingerprinting.

	If I currently hold a CA Teaching Credential and I have been selected for certificated employment in another district, will I be fingerprinted?
	If I do not hold a CA Teaching Credential and I have been selected for certificated employment, how many fingerprints will I need to provide?
	What if I am only applying for a substitute teacher permit?

A. A credentialed applicant (in the State of California) who is selected for certificated employment in another school district MAY only require fingerprints for employment by the hiring school district.

This assumes that the credentialed applicant possesses the appropriate credential, permit, or certificate issued by the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) and recorded at the county office of education serving the hiring school district.

A. A person selected for a certificated position who is also applying for his/her first credential, permit, or certificate in the State of California is required to submit fingerprints to the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). In addition to submitting fingerprints to the CCTC, applicants must also be fingerprinted for employment purposes.

A first credential applicant includes the following individuals:

1. Persons academically prepared for teaching in California who are seeking a preliminary credential and have not previously applied for any credential, permit, or certificate in the State of California. Such persons will apply for their credential through the university or college teacher preparation program.
2. Persons who possess out of state credentials and seek their first credential in the State of California.
3. Persons hired for teaching positions, while completing their teacher preparation program, who have never held a credential, certificate, or permit in the State of California.

A. A person applying for a Substitute Teacher Permit through a county office of education (COE) is required to be fingerprinted for the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). A substitute teacher permit will not be issued without CTC fingerprint clearance.​

A Substitute Teacher Permit allows you to substitute teach for 30 days in the same assignment in any Santa Clara County school district. Please be aware that you will be required to submit an official application for employment and be processed for substitute employment by each individual school district.
