SAN JOSE, CA – The California Department of Health Care Service (DHCS) is conducting a statewide public information, education, and outreach campaign to raise awareness about the return of the annual Medi-Cal redetermination process.
Medi-Cal members need to take the steps to keep themselves and their families covered. The Medi-Cal redetermination process has been underway since April 1, 2023. More than 400,000 people in Santa Clara County are impacted by this process.
Medi-Cal recipients should have received a packet of information to guide them through the determination process. Many Medi-Cal covered persons are yet unaware that redetermination of eligibility is occurring and may not realize that they need to take action in order to keep their insurance coverage. Everyone’s renewal date is different.
“When families lose access to healthcare, children are greatly impacted,” said Dr. Mary Ann Dewan, County Superintendent of Schools. “Students are at greater risk for school absences, lapses in immunizations needed for school and extracurricular activities, and may lose access to additional available supports to help them thrive.”
During the COVID-19 public health emergency, Medi-Cal and Medicaid coverage was expanded and annual eligibility reevaluation of eligibility was waived. The program has started re-assessing eligibility for recipients. Those whose circumstances have not changed could be automatically re-enrolled. Estimates that will be true for only about 20-30 percent of current recipients. As a public insurance health care program, Medi-Cal provides access to routine and emergency medical needs.
