Students to move on to National Competition
SAN JOSE, CA – Three Santa Clara County students were honored at the 2017 National History Day - California State Contest. The theme of this year's competition, "Taking a Stand in History" asked students to examine moments in history where people have used force, words, and economic power to make their voices heard.
- Stacey Chen from Saratoga High School received a California Historic Places Special Commendation Award for her project entitled, "We hold the rock: Red power taking a stand."
The California Historic Places Special Commendation Award is sponsored by the California Office of Historic Preservation, California Historical Society, and State Historical Resources Commission. It is given to entries that focus on the history of historic places in California - Buildings, sites, landscapes, and neighborhoods.
- Saayili Budhiraja and Divya Ganesan from Castilleja School were both champions in the Junior Group Website category for their joint project entitled, "Woodward and Bernstein: The Watergate Scandal - Taking a Stand for the Truth through Investigative Journalism."
Both Saayli and Divya will advance to represent California and compete against students from across the United States, American Samoa, Guam, International Schools, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe at the National Competition which takes place at the University of Maryland from June 11-15.
"The competition projects are judged for historical qualities including accuracy, analysis, and interpretation," according to Melissa Christie director of Curriculum & Instruction, at the Santa Clara County Office of Education.
"We are so proud of all the Santa Clara County students who submitted projects for National History Day, this program requires our students to spend a great deal of time focusing research projects outside their usual school work," Christie adds.
