SAN JOSE, CA – The County Superintendent of Schools and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 521 recently reached an agreement on a new three-year contract, effective September 1, 2016 and ending August 31, 2019. A public hearing on the disclosure of the collective bargaining agreement will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 13 in the Superintendent's Conference Room at 1290 Ridder Park Drive in San Jose.
Highlights from the agreement include scheduled salary increases of 5 percent, 4 percent, and 3 percent for the 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 school years respectively; and an increased cap on medical benefits from $1050 to $1071 monthly, effective from October 1, 2016. A committee will be convened to study the conversion to tiered medical benefit plans.
The agreement does contain contingency language that if the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) from the state is less than 1 percent in either year one or two, that salary increases would go back to negotiations. Other parts of the three-year agreement address longevity and stipends.
