SAN JOSE, CA – On Tuesday, February 13, the Santa Clara County Board of Education announced the appointment of Dr. Mary Ann Dewan as County Superintendent of Schools effective immediately.
Dr. Dewan joined the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) in October 2013 as Chief Schools Officer and then Deputy Superintendent since July 2015. She has served as Interim Superintendent from March to July 2014, and again since November 15, 2017.
"Dr. Dewan has proven her ability to lead effectively both recently and during her tenure with the county office. I am confident that under her leadership the SCCOE will accomplish the goals of the strategic plan initiative. Dr. Dewan has been very instrumental in the plan and has led a number of key initiatives including the early learning advocacy work," said Rosemary Kamei, Board President.
Dr. Dewan has over 27 years of experience in education and is recognized for her expertise and experience in early learning, special education, education reform, and change leadership.
"I am grateful for the trust and support of our County Board of Education, and look forward to continuing our shared work with the Board, SCCOE staff, school districts and community partners, parents and students to help the SCCOE become a more effective champion for children, schools, and communities," said Dr. Dewan.
Dr. Dewan earned her doctorate in educational administration from Indiana State University. She received a master's degree in educational administration and elementary education from Butler University, and a bachelor's degree in elementary education, with a minor in special education, from Marian University.

The Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) is a regional service agency that provides instructional and business services to the 31 school districts of Santa Clara County. The SCCOE serves students through special education programs, alternative schools, Head Start and State Preschool programs, migrant education, and Opportunity Youth Academy. The Office also provides curriculum support, staff development, and technology support and training directly to teachers and staff in schools countywide. The SCCOE provides oversight and monitoring for the 23 Santa Clara County Board authorized charter schools.
