SAN JOSE, CA – On Wednesday, January 13, 2021, the Santa Clara County Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution condemning the violent and seditious actions by a mob who overtook the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. on January 6th, impeding the critical work of Congress and causing destruction, violence and death.
The resolution denounces racism and white supremacy in all forms, and the vile and repugnant actions of the mob that assaulted the Capitol building and our most sacred institutions. It also reaffirms that the Santa Clara County Board of Education supports the essential democratic tenets of an orderly and peaceful transition of power and the ability of the Congress to conduct its business that is essential to our democracy.
The board further acknowledged that this horrific witness to incited, domestic terrorism at our Nation’s Capital, broadcasted live around the world, places the United States democracy in danger. The legacy and vision of our country's founders is a democracy characterized by vigorous and passionate debate, peaceful assembly and the honorable work towards shared solutions.
With the importance and priority of continuing to model integrity, collaboration, ethics, respect, equity and anti-racism for all students, the actions at the Nation’s Capital serve as a reminder of the importance of Ethnic Studies, Youth Civic Studies, awareness and engagement among other facets of education crucial to the academic and socioemotional development of individuals.
The Santa Clara County Board of Education and County Superintendent of Schools officially condemned the actions perpetrated on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 against the United States of America, the United States Congress and the Constitution of the United States and urged action to preserve our democracy and uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and affirm our oath of office to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution of the State of California.
