Welcome to the Santa Clara County History-Social Science & Civic Engagement Program!
Our mission is to provide instructional and support services that enhance the teaching and learning of economics, geography, world and United States history, and government. We are committed to fostering civic learning and participation by integrating culturally sustaining pedagogy and inquiry-based learning into history-social science education. Our goal is to move beyond rote memorization, engaging students in analyzing diverse perspectives, investigating primary sources, and connecting historical understanding to present-day issues.
The SCCOE History-Social Science (HSS) department provides:
- History-Social Science workshops, conferences, and student events for K-12 educators.
- Customized professional learning services for districts and schools, with a focus on culturally sustaining teaching and civic engagement education.
- Professional development to support the selection and implementation of high-quality, standards-aligned instructional materials.
- Resources and technical assistance to help educators and school administrators implement California's History-Social Science Framework effectively.
- Opportunities for students to engage in civic education projects that empower them to analyze contemporary issues, participate in democratic processes, and take informed action.
- Events that celebrate student learning and achievement in history, social science, and civic engagement.
Through our work, we strive to support educators in creating inclusive, student-centered learning environments that prepare all students to think critically, engage in meaningful discussions, and become active participants in their communities.
