SAN JOSE, CA – Fires in northern California and Oregon, combined with current wind patterns, have created a forecasted air quality index (AQI) to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups to Unhealthy range throughout the greater Bay Area Wednesday, September 20 and Thursday, September 21.
“The health and safety of students and staff is a top priority. Schools are encouraged to follow the school air quality guidance which includes limiting outdoor activity, keeping classroom windows and doors closed, and reducing vigorous physical activity. Wearing a mask is also a protective measure,” County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mary Ann Dewan stated.
Both AQI guidance and the school guidance can be found on the Santa Clara County Office of Education Emergency Advisory portal: sccoe.to/EmergencyAdvisory
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has also provided the EPA website as an additional resource. This site allows you to monitor specific areas and gather localized information related to current AQI levels: https://fire.airnow.gov/.
