SAN JOSE, CA – A statewide approach is set with a grant to transform how educators in California support children in transitional kindergarten through fifth grade, ensuring every student has strong reading and language skills needed to succeed.
As a trio, Placer, Santa Clara, and Tulare county offices of education will lead Partners Advancing Literacy & Language (PALL) to provide teachers, schools, and families with practical tools and resources to make literacy a priority in classrooms and homes.
Many students, especially those in underserved communities, begin school without a language and literacy foundation. These gaps can affect academic success for years. This initiative focuses on closing that gap in the following ways:
- Training for educators with hands-on coaching using proven strategies for teaching reading and language skills
- Support for school leaders to create strong literacy plans for schools
- Resources for families to create reading-friendly homes in multiple languages
- Community partnerships to help make literacy accessible
- Continuous improvement to ensure the programs work for all children
Through PALL, a sustainable statewide system can give every child robust reading and language skills needed to succeed in school and beyond.
The Santa Clara County Office of Education is also a partner in statewide grant initiatives with the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and the Napa County Office of Education regarding literacy and language development for various age groups. This uniquely positions the SCCOE to support a birth-to-12 literacy pipeline.
