San Jose, CA - The Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) and its partners were awarded a $19.5 million Learning Acceleration System grant from the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE) to administer an evidence-based professional learning model for educators that can support learning acceleration, particularly in mathematics, literacy, and language development.
Learning Acceleration is “about building bridges rather than filling holes” and provides student access to current grade-level content, rather than returning them to past content.
The SCCOE will lead and coordinate the California Collaborative for Learning Acceleration (CCLA) while working with multiple partners to reach educators across the state to advance a statewide professional learning initiative to mitigate the impact of COVID. These partners include Contra Costa (CCOE), Imperial (ICOE), Los Angeles (LACOE), Placer (PCOE), Riverside (RCOE) and Tulare (TCOE) County Offices of Education, California Partnership for Math and Science Education (CAPMSE), the Connie L. Lurie College of Education at San José State University (SJSU), and the Center to Support Excellence in Teaching (CSET) at Stanford University.
“The SCCOE is proud to lead and collaborate with others throughout the state to support educators,” said County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mary Ann Dewan. “The work done through the California Collaborative for Learning Acceleration aims to have a great impact on student learning.”
The CCLA’s vision is to build the capacity of administrators, teachers, paraeducators, and instructional coaches to support all students in grades TK-12, regardless of gender, race, learning differences, and socio-economic background through equitable, inclusive, evidence-based strategies (EBS) intentionally integrated system-wide.
The CCLA offers a three-tiered professional learning model that provides universal, supplemental, and/or intensified professional learning focused on building educators’ capacity in implementing evidence-based tutoring/small group instruction of priority content to accelerate learning. The design includes an online repository of high-quality professional learning resources for mathematics, literacy, and language development that integrate Universal Design for Learning, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and social-emotional learning practices within the Multi-Tiered System of Support framework. Seven regional hubs will be actively engaged in developing capacity across the state through local support and capacity building, professional learning networks, regional events, and customized coaching, providing the foundation for local sustainability following the conclusion of the grant. Ultimately, the goal is that every student in California has the math, literacy, and language knowledge and student agency to accelerate their learning.
