SAN JOSE, CA – A construction project to modernize facilities at the Santa Clara County Office of Education’s (SCCOE) Walden West Outdoor School and Summer Programs has been approved by the County of Santa Clara. For 75 years, Walden West has provided more than 6,000 students per year with meaningful learning opportunities rooted in environmental stewardship and personal growth. Projects such as these ensure student and staff experiences reflect equitable learning and teaching in modern times.
While this news is exciting, the SCCOE has a responsibility to ensure the safety of children who make lifetime memories at Walden West and to the staff who have and continue to provide high-quality student experiences.
Construction may significantly impact program operations during the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years. In preparation, the SCCOE is actively planning for short and long-term adjustments to program stability and prioritizing transparent decision-making as the organization, staff, and community navigate this transition.
“We know the positive impact Walden West has on students, families, and staff,” said County Superintendent Dr. David M. Toston, Sr. “At the same time, we acknowledge construction will have an impact on those same people and we are in the process of navigating that impact.”
First steps in the formal process of moving forward with this project include construction planning: selecting a construction firm, timelines, operational impacts, and ensuring smooth transitions during construction phases. In this current stage, the SCCOE does not yet know if the camp can operate safely during construction. When a construction firm is selected and details solidify, the SCCOE will know how to proceed with camp operations.
Because of this unknown, the SCCOE has issued preliminary layoff notices to Walden West staff to meet the mandated March 15 deadline. In transparency with our community, the SCCOE does not have the resources to replace the revenue generated by Walden West if the camp cannot operate during construction. At the same time, the SCCOE is evaluating options to continue the environmental education our community has enjoyed for over seven decades, while also ensuring safety, fiscal responsibility, and long-term sustainability.
As more information becomes available regarding developments, decisions, and next steps, the SCCOE will inform our community, staff, and partners.
