SAN JOSE, CA – Since the previous March update, construction at the Walden West Outdoor School and Summer Camp is expected to start on July 2. While this is an exciting milestone in a project that will modernize a community jewel, this brings a pause to summer camp in July.
The Santa Clara County Office of Education acknowledges that this news is disappointing to many, as the Walden West summer camp experience is truly unique and one that spans generations. Active construction, safety concerns, limited access to buildings, and possible service disruptions prevent the summer camp from safely operating. Rather than offering a limited experience, July camp is not being offered. This includes the following programs:
- Summer Day Camp
- Wild Things
- Leaders in Training
- Counselors in Training
- Summer Camp Counselors
The SCCOE has notified families registered for summer camp and is processing full refunds. Families registered for July sessions can request to switch to June sessions based on availability. Details can be found on the Walden West website at
https://www.waldenwest.org/summer-programs Based on where things currently stand, the SCCOE plans to offer science camp programming for the 2026-27 school year, beginning in September 2026. An alternate location to host programming for the next school year has been identified, Via West. Work remains to confirm the interest from schools and districts, finalize the lease, and plan for staffing. As the SCCOE proceeds with this alternate location, the organization recognizes that adjustments may happen over the course of this project. As such, the SCCOE remains committed to communicating updates to staff, families, and community partners.
