Statewide Educational Honors Recognize Outstanding Program and National Initiative
SAN JOSE, CA – The Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) today announced they were selected to receive two awards in education for a national initiative that works with schools and communities to further respect for culture and identity.
In partnership with the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE), SCCOE is being honored for creating an imperative initiative, My Name, My Identity: A Declaration of Self. This national initiative is designed to bring awareness to the importance of respecting one's name and identity in schools by the number of community members pledging to pronounce students' names correctly. It is also designed to build a respectful and caring culture in school communities that value diversity through my name stories posted on social media.
My Name, My Identity won the 2019 Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association. This statewide educational honor is a distinction that sets the SCCOE apart for its excellence and leadership. My Name, My Identity also received the Apple for Excellence Award, the only one award from California County Boards of Education to recognize outstanding programs administered by county offices of education, reflecting the depth and breadth of a county education program that is necessary to address students' changing needs.
“Bringing more awareness to the importance of respect for identity and culture not only validates the challenge as an obstacle in our schools and communities, but also celebrates the value and uniqueness each individual brings to our world," said Santa Clara County Superintendent, Dr. Mary Ann Dewan. “We are overwhelmingly humbled and honored to accept these awards for such a vital initiative."
