​​ For Preliminary Teaching Credentialing Candidates​

Please read instructions carefully and make sure you are following the outlined steps before submitting the Subject Matter Requirement (SMR) request.

​CSET Requirement Overview

Candidates earning their first special education credential need to meet the CSET requirement in order to be recommended for a Preliminary Education Specialist Credential.

The CSET exam requirement is applicable only to applicants applying for their first credential ​in the specializations of Special Education - Mild Moderate Support Needs or Extensive Support Needs credential.

Candidates who have not completed the exam have the option of requesting an evaluation of their coursework completed during their undergraduate program. A course evaluation determines if a candidates prior undergraduate coursework meets the CSET exam requirements per TK-12 Education Trailer Bill (AB 130)​.

​The fee for a course evaluation is $250, due at the time of evaluation submission. Please read the instructions listed below carefully and follow them as outlined.

This innovative, internship-based program, launched in Fall 2024, is designed to empower teachers with the skills to deliver high-quality, engaging content to all learners, grades K-8. With a supportive team approach, our program balances theoretical knowledge with practical application, making it perfect for working professionals.

• ​​This is a two-year internship-based program offering coursework 100% online. Eligible candidates work as paid interns​ in their second year.
• Cohorts begin each semester in Spring, Summer or Fall.
• First year focuses on coursework; second year, on coursework and internship.
  
• Interns are assigned a mentor at their school site and a school district support provider.
• Completion of the program results in a recommendation for a California Preliminary Teaching Credential​

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited university (or certified US equivalency for foreign degrees)
• Subject Matter Competence​ (pass CSET or demonstrate course equivalency)
  
• US Constitution Exam passing score

*Note: As of June 29, 2024, Governor Newsom​ signed Senate Bill 153, which includes a provision that allows a candidate’s bachelor's degree to meet the Basic Skills Requirements (BSR) for most credentials. This means that the CBEST is no longer required for our program.​

​​The Education Specialist Accelerated Pathway - ​Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) is designed for the ​ experienced teacher with a Multiple Subject or Single Subject Credential​ seeking to add an Early Childhood Education Specialist Credential to their educational portfolio. ​Teachers with special education credentials in other areas of specialization are welcome to apply as well. ​
This specialization authorizes the holder to conduct assessments, provide instruction, and special education related services to children from birth through kindergarten, with a primary disability of:

• Specific learning disabilities
• Mild/moderate intellectual disability
• Moderate/severe intellectual disability
• Traumatic brain injury
• Other health impairment
• Autism spectrum disorder
• Deafness-blindness
• Serious emotional disturbance

• This internship-based program offers coursework 100% online.

• If you enter the accelerated program with a clear credential, you will retain your clear credential.

Educator Preparation Programs suppports Special Education teachers credentialed before 2021 in meeting the new California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC)​ standards through our fully online Education Specialist Bridge Authorization Program.

Conducted completely online, via an asynchronous model for maximum flexibility, this program helps educators transition from their existing special education credentials to the updated standards—enabling them to serve a broader range of student needs.

Educators who hold a full Clear Education Specialist Credential in Mild/Moderate Disabilities, Moderate/Severe Disabilities, or Early Childhood Special Education—including authorization for autism instruction or an equivalent—may apply for the program

Applying for the Program

Once you have the documents ready, please create an online profile, if you don't already have one, and complete the online application.
