   <em>For Preliminary Teaching Credentialing Candidates​</em></h3> ​​ 
<p style="font-size&#58;1.2rem;margin-top&#58;0px;"> Please read instructions carefully and make sure you are following the outlined steps before submitting the Subject Matter Requirement&#160;(SMR) request.<br></p><hr />​ 
<h2 style="margin-top&#58;0px;">​CSET Requirement Overview<br></h2><p>Candidates earning their first special education credential 
   <strong>need to meet the CSET requirement in order to be recommended for a Preliminary Education Specialist Credential</strong>. </p><p>The 
   <strong>CSET exam requirement</strong> is applicable only to applicants applying for their first credential ​in the specializations of 
   <strong>Special Education - Mild Moderate Support Needs or Extensive Support Needs</strong> credential.</p><p>Candidates who have not completed the exam have the option of requesting an 
   <strong>evaluation of their coursework completed during their undergraduate program</strong>. A course evaluation determines if a candidates prior undergraduate coursework meets the CSET exam requirements per 
   <a href="/epp/teaching-credentialing/Pages/%22https&#58;//www.ctc.ca.gov/commission/newsroom/press-releases/2021-to-2022/2021-02%22;" target="_blank">TK-12 Education Trailer Bill (AB 130)</a>​.</p>​<span style="font-size&#58;1rem;">T</span><span style="font-size&#58;1rem;">he </span> 
<strong style="font-size&#58;1rem;">fee for a course evaluation is $250</strong><span style="font-size&#58;1rem;">, due at the time of evaluation submission. Please read the instructions listed below carefully and follow them as outlined.&#160;</span>

This is relevant if your degree major does not have an exact match. Check the list of 
         <a href="https&#58;//www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/req-credentials/appropriate-degrees-to-satisfy-subject-matter-competence" target="_blank">CTC applicable degree majors​</a>&#160;for more information.    <strong>​The Preliminary Education Specialist&#160;Teaching&#160;Credential -&#160;</strong><strong>Mild to Moderate Support Needs (MMSN)&#160;specialization </strong> prepares&#160;candidates to provide​ specially designed instruction, enabling stud​e​nts&#160;(TK-22) ​to access grade-level

<p>The ​Education Specialist provide&#160;instruction and supports&#160;in one or more of the following domains&#58; </p><ul><li>Academics<br></li><li>Communication</li><li>Gross/fine motor</li><li>Social-Emotional</li><li>Behavioral</li><li>Learning environment access skills</li></ul>​​<span style="font-size&#58;1rem;">The supports may also include ​health, movement, and sensory support. MMSN&#160;practices may include&#160;a lower&#160;student-to-educator ratio.</span>​ ​

      <p>The Preliminary Education Specialist Teaching Credential&#160;- MMSN coursework consists of courses that equip educators to serve students ages TK-22 with learning disabilities, autism, and similar needs to access Grade-Level California&#160;Content standards in the Least Restrictive Environment. </p><p>There are 
         <strong>three cohort entry points​—Spring, Summer, and Fall</strong>—each with a 
         <strong>designated course sequence aligned to that cohort</strong>. To support candidate success and ensure readiness as an educator, ​<strong>all candidates are required to follow the prescribed course sequence</strong>.&#160;Any deviation from the sequence must be formally approved by the Program Coordinator and will only be considered under specific circumstances. </p><ul><li>

      <strong>Hold a Clear Teaching Credential</strong> ​or a 
      <strong>Preliminary Teaching Credential​ and at least two years of exemplary teaching experience</strong>​​.​​</li><li style="margin-top&#58;6px;">Submit a verification of employment as the teacher on record in a Mild to Moderate Support Needs classroom.</li><li style="margin-top&#58;6px;">Submit a letter of recommendation</li><li style="margin-top&#58;6px;">​Submit a letter of intent​<br></li></ul>​
