SAN JOSE, CA – On December 15, 2021, the Santa Clara County Board of Education (SCCBOE) elected its officers for 2022. Trustee Peter Ortiz, elected to the board in 2018, was named president, and Trustee Victoria Chon, elected to the board in 2020, was named vice president.
President Ortiz serves Area 6 which includes Alum Rock, Mt. Pleasant, and Franklin-McKinley, and corresponding portions of East Side Union High school districts and a small part of San Jose Unified. Before Ortiz's three years of service at the SCCBOE, he previously served on the school board of Mt. Pleasant Elementary School District. He is an avid supporter of youth and community development and universal childcare, and currently serves on the Policy Development Subcommittee and Joint Legislative Advisory Committee. Ortiz takes over the gavel from Trustee Claudia Rossi.
Vice President Chon serves Area 5 which includes the majority of Santa Clara Unified, Milpitas Unified, Orchard, Berryessa Union, and the corresponding portion of East Side Union High school districts. Chon is a current public school teacher in Alameda County and serves as an Elementary Director on her Teacher's Union Executive Board. She is also a member of the Warmenhoven Inclusion Collaborative Advisory Board and serves on the Budget Study Committee and Policy Development Subcommittee alongside President Ortiz. Chon's appointment follows former Vice President Ortiz.
"I will bring a lens of equity to this governance and continue this Board's legacy for education, justice and the empowerment of our most vulnerable populations,” said President Ortiz.
The Santa Clara County Board of Education has seven members. In addition to newly elected President Ortiz and Vice President Chon, the current members of the County Board of Education are Claudia Rossi (Area 7), Joseph Di Salvo (Area 4), Rosemary Kamei (Area 3), Grace H. Mah (Area 1), and Tara Sreekrishnan (Area 2).
