​​​​​​​​Parent Engagement Training Modules

Parents have opportunities to deepen and refine their skills at a series of follow-up workshops offered by school districts. ​Enroll your school or district and invite parents to attend these Parent Engagement sessions. Sessions can be offered in-person at your school site or virtually. Sessions will be conducted in English. Schools / districts can provide their own childcare, interpretation, or snacks for a successful parent engagement session.

photoThe sessions help parents learn appropriate child development and effective discipline strategies, as well as understand their children’s unique learning needs. Parents will learn how to partner with their children’s school to support a healthy school climate, and they’ll practice academic support strategies that can help children learn at home. Training modules allow parents the opportunity to continue to hone their ability to improve student achievement by addressing the academic, discipline, nutrition and safety needs of their children. Modules address specific topics and are targeted for various student age groups. 

Parent Project Junior

Parent Project Junior Training is a four-session workshop series (90 minutes each session) for parents of Transitional Kindergarten to 5th grade students. Using a culturally sensitive manner, this interactive workshop series combines social emotional learning (SEL) parenting strategies so that parents may understand how to lovingly parent and support their child’s growth and learning.

Topics include:
● Parenting the strong-willed child
● Parental influence
● Encouraging positive choices
● Structuring for success
● Improving school performance

Active Parenting

Active Parenting Training  is a four-session workshop series (90 minutes each session) for parents of preadolescents and adolescents in 6th to 12th grades. Using a culturally sensitive manner, parents learn about the social emotional developmental needs of adolescents, effective communication, and other strategies they can use to help their teens develop into responsible and courageous adults.

Topics include:
● Active listening
● How teens gain more independence with responsibility
● How to reduce risky behavior

​Restorative practices are built on the idea that everyone's voice matters and that everyone deserves to be heard. Parents will learn how to facilitate restorative conversations within their family​​.

​Not So Safe: Vape and Tobacco Use Prevention Education Parent Night
​This interactive workshop for parents focuses on sharing vape-prevention information and effective communication strategies with their children. Parents will evaluate scenarios and practice having conversations with their children related to the dangers of substance abuse and steering them towards healthy habits.​​

​Ever wonder how you could help your child build a great foundation in reading? ​Guiding and Coaching Your Aspiring Writer
​This parent works​hop will give strategies to guide and coach your aspiring writer with confidence. We will talk about how to help your child improve sentences and how to affirm and gently nudge children to expand their idea development.

​Reading Comprehension Support: Connection Through Conversation
​As children grow up, parents may find it difficult to understand what their child is reading, let alone support them with reading comprehension. Not so! Recognizing the critical role that parental involvement plays in student success, the Santa Clara County Office of Education began the Region V Parent Engagement Initiative to provide parents with the tools to support their children's academic achievement – and then teach other parents to do the same.

Launched in the 2010-11 school year, the initiative empowers parents to improve student achievement by addressing the academic, social emotional, and safety needs of their children. Participants in the initiative's robust offering of trainings and workshops learn multiple and specific strategies to support their children's needs.

A multi-tiered program allows parents a chance to learn new techniques first, and then later practice their new skills and improve their strategies through collaboration with other parents.

In 2024, the program name was updated to the Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Program to acknowlege the wider family and community system needed to support students. The FACE program partners with CA PBIS​ and NAFSCE to contribute to state and national level family engagement dialogue and to bring research-based practices to Santa Clara County. 

Parent Engagement Initiative Accomplishments:

  • 18 districts and charter schools expanded programs.
  • Conferences and workshops served over 14,698 participants 235 parent leaders completed basic training.
  • Partnered with funders, publishers, and RAFT to create 130 common core kits and power lessons in Spanish, English, and Vietnamese.

  • Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Community of Practice for Community Liaisons
