Committee assignments: Policy Development Subcommittee

Dr. Michael Chang is a faculty member, department chairman, and founder of the Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute at De Anza College. He was elected to the Santa Clara County Board of Education in 2010 in Trustee Area 2.

A West Valley resident for more than 30 years, Michael has served successfully in local public offices since 1991. As a two-term Cupertino mayor and city council member, Michael led the building of a much-needed new city library which would have the highest circulation in the county. Before that, as president and board member of the Cupertino Union School District, Michael's accomplishments included the reduction of K-3 class size to improve student success and the establishment of an alternative school with a science and technology focus.

In 1997, Michael combined his commitment to civic leadership and his passion for education to establish at De Anza College a nationally recognized leadership institute promoting civic education and student success.

In 2003, he was selected as a senior fellow of the American Leadership Forum-Silicon Valley. In 2010, during Asian Pacific Heritage month, Michael was honored on the State Assembly floor as Educator of the Year for his work in civic education and leadership.

Michael holds five university degrees, including bachelor's degrees in business administration and philosophy from San Francisco State University, as well as a Ph.D. in education from Stanford University. Michael and his wife Barbara, a dietitian and adjunct faculty at San Jose State University, are empty-nesters living in Cupertino. Their son Jonathan is a senior in informatics at UC Irvine, and their daughter Jacquelyn is a first-year social science student at UC Davis.
