Position Statement-Developmentally Appropriate Practice -
Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children from Birth through
Age 8 (Adopted 2009). This statement is intended to complement NAEYC’s other position statements on
practice, which include Early Learning Standards and Early Childhood Curriculum, Assessment, and
Program Evaluation, as well as the Code of Ethical Conduct and NAEYC Early Childhood Program
Standards and Accreditation Criteria.
- Recognition &
Response for pre-school is based on an approach called Response to
Intervention (RTI) designed for school-age children who are at risk for
learning disabilities. RTI emphasizes early intervening rather than waiting
until children fail. Teachers use early and intensive interventions in the
general education classroom before they refer children with learning
difficulties for further assessment and special education services.
- Special Education Early Childhood Administrators Project (SEECAP)
SEECAP is a special project of the California Department of Education, Special Education Division and is
coordinated by the San Diego County Office of Education, Early Education Services and Programs Unit. This
professional development project was instituted in support of research indicating that there is a direct
relationship between quality early intervention programs and the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the
administrators who run those programs.

- Inclusive Learning Environments for Students with Special Needs - Inclusive Learning Environments
for Students Special Needs is a database serving teachers and school districts in Washington State.
This database/website provides information on laws, best practices, examples of programs and recommended
resources related to the use of inclusion strategies by school districts for the provision of special
education services. It is located in The Building, a database of learning resources.

The NECTAC Web site provides information for early childhood programs funded

- National Professional Development Center on Inclusion -
The National Professional Development Center on Inclusion (NPDCI) is working with states to create
a system of high quality, cross-agency, accessible professional development for early childhood
personnel. While NPDCI will serve as a resource to all states, the center will select eight states
for more intense collaboration.
