Resolution in Support of Operation Graduate
Whereas, thousands of young men and women left high school to serve in the United States Armed Forces during the 1940s and 1950s; and Whereas, after these wars, many veterans were not able to finish high school, but led productive lives and helped build our communities over their lifetimes; and Whereas, thousands of Japanese-American citizens were forced to leave their homes to be interned in relocation camps during World War II; and Whereas, these Japanese-American citizens were denied the freedom other Americans enjoyed, and many served with the U.S. Armed Forces and, though unable to complete high school, went on to build productive lives and contribute proudly to the American way of life; and Whereas, OPERATION GRADUATE will focus on identifying World War II and Korean War veterans and Japanese-American citizens who were interned, and who were unable to complete their high school education due to:
Whereas, these veterans and Japanese-American citizens will be awarded high school diplomas from the Santa Clara County Office of Education as a gesture of our society’s gratitude for the sacrifices they made; and Whereas, if these individuals had been enrolled in a Santa Clara County high school, arrangements will be made to award a diploma from that high school. Therefore, let it be resolved, that the Santa Clara County Board of Education supports OPERATION GRADUATE PASSED AND ADOPTED this 18th day of September, 2002.
