San Jose, SVLG Contribute
to COE’s fit for learning
SAN JOSE, CA –Two checks totaling over $5,000 in support of fit for learning were presented to the Santa Clara County Board of Education at its July 21 meeting.
The City of San Jose donated $2,500, along with two bicycles valued at $500 each. The donations were raised in the San Jose Cycling Classic’s King of the Mountain Event.
The Silicon Valley Leadership Group donated $2,750. The donation was raised during the Cycling Classic’s “Executive Challenge.”
“Too many kids and too many adults are leading sedentary lives,” said Carl Guardino, president and CEO of the Leadership Group. Guardino presented the SVLG’s check to Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools Charles Weis.
“That’s why we are so impressed and inspired by fit for learning,” Guardino said. “We applaud all you do to tie a healthy mind to a healthy body.”
Kerry Adams-Hapner, director for the Office of Cultural Affairs for San Jose, presented the city’s check to Weis. “Thank you very much—keep up the great work, it’s very important,” she said.
The bicycles donated by the city already are being used at the COE’s Gateway Special Education facility.
The fit for learning program was launched by the Santa Clara County Office of Education in 2005 in response to increasing rates of childhood obesity. Designed in alignment with the California Content Standards, the program also helps schools adhere to and support the guidelines in their district’s Local School Wellness Policy.
