Santa Clara County Students
Continue to Improve on Standards Tests
SAN JOSE, CA – Continuing to draw a steady line of progress, students in
Santa Clara County in almost all grades and subgroups recorded improved scores
on the California Standards Tests, according to data released to the public on
Thursday by the California Department of Education.
Also, county students almost uniformly outperformed their statewide peers on
the tests, according to an analysis of the results by the Santa Clara County
Office of Education.
Another highlight of the analysis involved those county students who take
algebra, biology, chemistry and physics courses. While the overall number of
county students taking those courses has increased significantly since 2004,
their scores have not suffered. In fact, the percentage of those students
ranking as "proficient" or above actually increased in each course.
However, some subgroups in the county continue to perform significantly
better than others, a trend that has not significantly changed since the test’s
inception. "This persistent, pernicious achievement gap requires our attention
and our energy," said Charles Weis, county superintendent of schools.
One county subgroup, Filipino students, recorded lower scores on the test
than their statewide counterparts. "This will be a focus of our support services
in the Instructional Services Branch," Weis said.
