Standards Test Results Analysis

The California Department of Education released the 2007 California Standards Tests (CST) results to the schools. These results are scheduled for public release on August 15, 2007. As a reminder, the CST scores will become a part of both AYP and API scores; therefore, you can expect these scores to be consistent with AYP and API. They are scheduled for public release on August 31, 2007.

Dr. Dale Russell and Linda Aceves from our office have analyzed the data and their findings are presented in two parts: Part 1 compares performance of Santa Clara County (SCC) students with California students; Part 2 summarizes SCC student performance on the 2003 to 2007 CSTs. Also included are selected trends of four student subgroups. Note that CSTs in science have been phased in over the past four years so trend and comparative data are incomplete in grades eight and ten (Figure 10).

Part 1: Santa Clara County Compared to California

English/Language Arts

A higher percentage of our students scored proficient and advanced than students statewide for most subgroups (Figure 1).

Mathematics

A higher percentage of our students scored proficient and advanced than students statewide all subgroups (Figure 2).

Science

A higher percentage of our students scored proficient and advanced than students statewide (Figure 3).

History/Social Science

A higher percentage of grade eight students scored proficient and advanced than their peers statewide (Figure 4).

Part 2: Santa Clara County Scores Over Time

The number of Santa Clara County students taking higher level Mathematics and Science courses has increased in the past four years notably in Algebra I, Algebra II, Biology and Physics.

English/Language Arts (ELA)

Fifty-four percent of our students were proficient or advanced in ELA this year. In the fourth, seventh, ninth and tenth grade levels, our students improved from 2006 to 2007. The greatest improvement over the five-year period for ELA was made by students in grade four, with the percent of proficient and advanced increasing by eleven percent (Figure 5).

Asian and White students scored highest while African American, English Learners, Economically Disadvantaged, Hispanic and Students with Disabilities subgroups scored lower in English/Language Arts (Figure 1).

Asian and White students scored higher than other ethnic subgroups. This trend has been consistent over the past five years (Figure 6).

Mathematics

Sixty percent of our students were proficient or advanced across all grades. In the fourth and sixth grades, our students improved from 2006 to 2007. The greatest improvement over the five-year period for Mathematics was made by students in grade five, with the percent of proficient and advanced increasing by twelve points (Figure 7).

Asian and White students scored highest while African American, English Learners, Economically Disadvantaged, Hispanic and Students with Disabilities subgroups scored lower (Figure 8).

Asian and White grades two through seven students scored higher than other ethnic subgroups. This trend has been consistent over the past five years (Figure 9).

Science

Our students scoring proficient or advanced increased in all three Science tests at fifth, eight and tenth grades and on the high school science end of course tests except earth science. The percent of our students scoring at proficient or advanced ranged from twenty eight to fifty four percent depending on the science course. The greatest improvement over the four-year period for science was made by students in grade five, with the percent of proficient and advanced increasing by fifteen points (Figure 10).

Asian and White students scored highest and African American, English Learners, Economically Disadvantaged, Hispanic and Students with Disabilities scored lower (Figures 11 and 12).

Asian and White students scored higher than other ethnic subgroups on the fifth grade Science test. This trend has been consistent over the past five years (Figure 13).

History/Social Science

Forty-seven percent of our students scored proficient or advanced on the grade eight History/Social Science test. In high school courses requiring a CST, forty-one percent of students were proficient or advanced in World History and forty-four percent were proficient or advanced in United States History. The greatest improvement over the five-year period for students in History/Social science was made by students in grade eight and in World History, with the percent of proficient and advanced increasing by three points each (Figure 14).

Asian and White students scored highest and African American, English Learners, Economically Disadvantaged, Hispanic and Students with Disabilities scored lower on all History/Social Science CSTs (Figure 15).

Asian and White students scored higher than other ethnic subgroups on the History Social Science grade eight cumulative test. This trend has been consistent over the past five years (Figure 16).
