Interim Superintendent Takes Charge
At County Office of Education
SAN JOSE, CA – Declaring "a new day" for the Santa Clara
County Office of Education, Interim Superintendent Joe Fimiani began his first
day in that role by reminding employees of the importance of the office's
mission.
"We're all here, in one way or another, to support public education in
this county," Fimiani wrote in an e-mail to the staff. "It's a new day
at the county office, and I'm eager to get started with you as we renew our
efforts in providing that support."
Fimiani was named interim superintendent by the county Board of Education
effective Nov. 1 with the departure of Colleen Wilcox. He was a long-time
special education administrator at the SCCOE before becoming assistant
superintendent of the COE's Student Services branch in 2002.
"It's so important that the office has a work environment in which
employees can be at their most productive," board Chairman Gary Rummelhoff
said. "Joe's steady hand, his ability to listen, his knowledge of the COE…all
those factors will help create an office climate that's conducive to folks'
doing their best work."
Following a November 14 deadline for submissions, the board will review
proposals from search firms to help with the recruitment of a long-term
replacement. The successful firm will be selected Nov. 26 and the recruitment
process will begin Nov. 27.
"We want to make sure the public has the chance to let us know what they
want in a candidate," Rummelhoff said. "We are going to listen to what
people have to say about putting the right person in the job."
