Wilcox Announces Intent to Retire
As County Schools Superintendent
SAN JOSE, CA – Dr. Colleen B. Wilcox, Santa Clara County Superintendent of
Schools, announced on Wednesday her intent to retire from the county office in
November.
In a letter to SCCOE managers, Dr. Wilcox wrote, "October marks my 14th
anniversary as the County Superintendent. I owe a great debt of gratitude to the
remarkable staff members who are ultimately responsible for all the achievements
this Office had made."
Dr. Wilcox added: "It is certainly the right time for me to move on to
the ‘next chapter' in my professional life."
Among Dr. Wilcox's accomplishments during her tenure as county schools chief:
- Founded the Fit for Learning program and chaired its advisory board
- Secured $60 million in facilities for special education programs
- Established a volunteer program for COE programs that has trained and
placed more than 300 volunteers
- Founded and co-chaired the Walden West Foundation
- Served as president of the Horace Mann League of the United States
Although details of the transition have not been finalized, Joe Fimiani,
SCCOE assistant superintendent for Student Services, will serve as acting
superintendent as the County Board of Education conducts its search for a
replacement.
Fimiani was a long-time special education administrator at the SCCOE before
becoming an assistant superintendent in 2002. In that role he has overseen a
branch that provides classes and educational programs through Alternative
Schools, Special Education, Children's Services, and Environmental Education
departments.
