Groundbreaking Scheduled
For San Jose Special Ed Facility
SAN JOSE, CA – Ground will be broken Monday, June 16, for construction of
a new $7.5 million facility that will serve special education students of the
Santa Clara County Office of Education. The facility will be built on the campus
of Anne Darling School in the San Jose Unified School District.
The facility, which will serve students with severe disabilities, replaces
the East Valley facility, which the COE had operated for more than 50 years.
East Valley was demolished about two years ago.
Officials of both the COE and SJUSD will be present at the ground-breaking,
including Interim County Superintendent of Schools Joe Fimiani, and San Jose
Unified Superintendent Don Iglesias.
The facility is expected to be ready for use in the fall of 2009. Funding
comes from money raised by Proposition 55, a measure for the sale of bonds for
school facilities construction and renovation, which California voters approved
in 2004. Recently ground was broken on another COE special education facility,
located in Gilroy.
"We are gathering momentum on finally bringing facilities up to snuff for
students who need and deserve them," Fimiani said .
The groundbreaking will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Darling campus,
located at 333 North 33rd St. in San Jose.
