Grant for Teaching American History
A million-dollar grant to support the teaching of American history has been
received by the Santa Clara County Office of Education.
The goal of the federal grant program is to support efforts to raise student
achievement by improving teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of
American history
The grant will enable the SCCOE to recruit 35 teachers to participate in
master’s level U.S. History course work at San Jose State University. Grant
funds will pay for university fees and a U.S. history primer library worth about
$1,500.
The 35 teachers will be directly involved in the next two phases of the grant
program. After their study is completed, they will conduct training in American
history for an additional 140 teachers throughout Santa Clara County.
The third phase of the grant work, open to all who teach American history in
Santa Clara County, will offer a program of scholarly lectures, book talks and
methods to help students competing in History Day competition.
The duration of the program runs from July 2006 to July 2009.
The SCCOE is now recruiting teachers to participate in the first phase of the
program. To apply or for more information, contact David Walters, coordinator
for history/social science, at david_walters@sccoe.org,
