37th Annual Event Upcoming:
Santa Clara County’s Finest Teachers
Honored on Teacher Recognition Day
Thirty "Teachers
of the Year" from Santa Clara County school districts will be applauded
by colleagues and community leaders at the countywide 37th Annual Teacher
Recognition Day awards ceremony, Monday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Heritage
Theatre in Campbell.
Honorees were selected by their districts for the most prestigious local
award given to classroom teachers. The recognition ceremony, presented by the
Santa Clara County Office of Education, is the oldest and largest of its kind in
California.
The 2006 honorees include teachers of every grade from kindergarten through
high school, as well as special education and adult education. Some have taught
for as few as four years, others for as many as 41 years. Some of their
accomplishments include:
- Giving special education students a chance to snorkel, ride horses and
present concert performances. (Susan Floethe, Special Education, County
Office of Education);
- Chairing her school’s Social Studies Department, along with the
Homestead Staff Senate, and coaching new and veteran teachers through the
Peer Assistance and Review program. (Christy Heaton, Fremont Union High
School District).
- Working with families after school in reading intervention sessions, so
that under-performing children can meet grade level standards.
(Diana Orlando, Milpitas Unified School District);
- Piloting a new social studies series, helping coordinating a science fair,
preparing PE schedules and planning a class trip—all in one year.
(Janet Castaneda, Mount Pleasant School District);
"If you could see what these teachers achieve in their classrooms and
schools on a daily basis, you’d be amazed,” said Dr. Colleen Wilcox, County
Superintendent of Schools. "They are passionate about making a difference
to every student they come across.”
The gala ceremony will be co-hosted by Superintendent Wilcox and by Brian
Adams, vice president of Orloff/Williams & Co. Honorees will be presented
with engraved awards, entertained by student singers and dancers, and featured
in video profiles.
Teacher Recognition Day is co-sponsored by the SCCOE, Santa Clara County
Federal Credit Union and National Semiconductor Foundation, with support from
the San Jose Mercury News.
Additional support is given by American Musical Theatre of San Jose,
Children's Musical Theatre of San Jose, Cittis Forist, the Computer
History Museum, Hicklebee's Children's Bookstore, the Marine Science
Institute, Milligan News Company, the Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT), Sixth
District PTA, Santa Clara County School Boards Association, and other
