SAN JOSE, CA – Santa Clara County 10-graders who took the California
High School Exit Exam last school year passed at an 83 percent rate on both the
English/language arts and math sections, according to results released Tuesday
by the California Department of Education.
California students who enter the 10th grade take the exam for the first time
that year. Santa Clara County 10th-graders taking the test in 2005-2006 as a
whole improved slightly in their pass rate in both segments of the test—up
from 82 percent last year in each segment.
Also, ethnic subgroups of 10th-graders in all cases but one either stayed the
same or improved from last year's pass rate to this year's.
As has consistently been the case in the past, a higher percentage of county
10th-graders passed the test than did their peers statewide. (In ELA, 77 percent
of 10th-graders statewide passed; in math, 75 percent passed.)
Passage of the CAHSEE, which assesses student mastery of state content
standards in ELA and mathematics, became a California graduation requirement
this year for all public school high school students.
Staff at the Santa Clara County Office of Education analyzed the CAHSEE data
both for overall trends and trends among subgroups. The analysis can be seen at www.sccoe.org,
under "News & Features" ("CAHSEE Results").
