Record 324 County Students
Graduate From AVID Program

SAN JOSE, CA –  A record 324 Santa Clara County students were honored on Wednesday as graduates of the Advancement Via Individual Determination program.

"You are on the verge of a tremendous opportunity," county schools Superintendent Colleen Wilcox told the AVID graduates in the ceremony, held at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose.

AVID provides promising students with access to rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, tutoring, and college and career counseling.  In many cases, AVID graduates are the first in their family to attend college. The program serves more than 122,000 middle school and high school students in 39 states and 15 countries.

The local program started 10 years ago with 77 graduates and 32 participating schools. This year there were 74 schools.  Of this year’s AVID graduates:

  • 89 percent completed the "A–thru-G" curriculum to qualify for admission to the University of California system;
  • 98 percent took the SAT or ACT;
  • 44 percent were accepted by one of the California State University system campuses;
  • 77 percent were accepted by a four-year college or university.

This year's graduates came from the following high schools: Fremont, Leigh, Los Altos, Milpitas, Monta Vista, Mountain View, Mount Pleasant, Overfelt, Piedmont Hills, Silver Creek, Sobrato, Wilcox, Willow Glen and Yerba Buena, along with Accel Middle College, which is a cooperative program between the East Side Union High School District and Evergreen Valley Community College.
