Mah Appointment to be Official
Unless Voter Petition Submitted
SAN JOSE, CA – The provisional appointment of Grace H. Mah to the Santa
Clara County Board of Education would become effective in a little less than a
month, unless a petition calling for a special election and containing a
sufficient number of signatures is filed in the office of the county
superintendent of schools by April 27, 2007.
According to the California Education Code, a special election can be called
if the petition is signed by a number of registered voters equal to at least 1.5
percent of the number of registered voters of the district at the time of the
last regular election for board members.
The petition must be submitted to County Superintendent Colleen Wilcox within
30 days of Mah's provisional appointment, which was made by the county board
at a March 28 special meeting.
Mah was appointed to fill the vacant seat in Trustee Area 1, which had been
occupied by Williamson M. "Bill" Evers. He resigned the seat on Feb.
7.
Mah, one of three applicants for the seat, is a board member of the Palo Alto
Family YMCA, a parent volunteer at Hoover Elementary School in Palo Alto, and an
advocate for a Mandarin language immersion program in Palo Alto.
Board Trustee Area 1 includes the Palo Alto Unified, Sunnyvale, Mountain
View-Whisman school districts and the corresponding portions of Fremont Union
and Mountain View-Los Altos Union High school districts.
