Palo Alto Team Wins Mock Trial Event
SAN JOSE, CA – A team from Palo Alto High School is headed to the state
mock trial championship later this month, after winning the 2007 Santa Clara
County Mock Trial competition.
Palo Alto defeated a team from Lynbrook High in the finals last week at the
Superior Courthouse in San Jose, in the event co-sponsored by the Santa Clara
County Office of Education. Palo Alto was the runner-up last year, when a team
from Prospect High won the championship.
Representatives from 26 public and private high schools in Santa Clara County
participated in Mock Trial this year. Each team participated in at least four
rounds. The other two teams that made it to the semi-finals were Leland and
Mitty.
Each year for Mock Trial, the Constitutional Rights Foundation puts together
a criminal court case of interest to high school students. The case requires
interpretation of facts and relevant case law, the ability to understand
difficult reading passages, and a little acting ability. Students get the
opportunity to act as lawyers, witnesses, bailiff, or time-keepers for the
event.
The annual Mock Trial competition is a collaborative event between the Santa
Clara County Office of Education and the Santa Clara County Bar Association.
Every scoring judge is a practicing attorney and member of the bar. The
presiding judges are sitting judges for the county court system. Judges and
attorneys volunteer their time.
