San Jose, CA…Williamson M. "Bill" Evers, an educational researcher at
Stanford University's Hoover Institution, has announced his resignation from
the Santa Clara County Board of Education because President George W. Bush has
nominated Evers to be U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education for Planning,
Evaluation and Policy Development.
According to County Board of Education President Gary Rummelhoff, the board
will make a provisional appointment to fill Evers’ vacancy in Board Trustee
Area 1. The appointee will serve until the term of office expires in November
2008.
"Bill has been a highly informed and engaged trustee, and I will miss him
greatly," said Colleen Wilcox, county superintendent of schools, "However,
this is a wonderful opportunity for him, and we wish him the best in his new
role in Washington."
Persons who would like to be considered as a candidate for appointment are
invited to submit an application. Applicants must be registered voters and must
reside within Board Trustee Area 1, which includes Palo Alto Unified, Sunnyvale,
Mountain View-Whisman and corresponding portions of Fremont Union and Mountain
View-Los Altos Union high school districts. The candidate selected cannot be
employed by the Santa Clara County Office of Education or any school district
while serving on the board.
Interested individuals should submit a letter that includes interests and
qualifications for the position. Include a minimum of three references and a
resume. All materials must be received by 5:00 p.m., Monday, March 5, 2007.
Submit applications to Dr. Colleen Wilcox, Santa Clara County Superintendent of
Schools, 1290 Ridder Park Drive, San Jose, CA 95131-2304 or fax to (408)
453-6601.
Selected candidates will be interviewed at a public meeting of the board.
According to Rummelhoff, it is anticipated that the board will act on the
appointment in April.
The board sets the policies that guide SCCOE and establishes its operating
budget. In addition, the board serves as an appeals board for such actions as
interdistrict attendance requests, student expulsions and charter school
petitions.
