San Jose to Play Host
To Bilingual Education Group
SAN JOSE, CA – Educators from all over the nation will be in San Jose
this week to attend the 36th annual conference of the National Association for
Bilingual Education.
The Santa Clara County Office of Education is a major sponsor of the four-day
conference, which offers a wide variety of resources and strategies for
educators who work with English learners and students learning a second
language.
California has about 1.6 million students classified as English language
learners--about 25 percent of the total student population.
"Our national wealth in the presence and influence of languages and cultures
is a fantastic opportunity to enrich the lives of our students, our communities
and ourselves," said Dr. Colleen Wilcox, SCCOE schools superintendent, and an
honorary co-chair of the event.
Up to 5,000 educators are expected to attend the conference, which begins
Feb. 7 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. In addition to the more than
400 study sessions available, participants also will be able to visit area
schools’ programs in language acquisition. The conference also will feature a
job fair.
Janet Zadina, a professor in cognitive neuroscience at Tulane University,
will give the keynote address.
This is the first time NABE has held its annual conference in California
since 1994, when it was held in Los Angeles. For more information on the
conference, visit www.nabe.org.
