Knowledge of U.S. Constitution
Key to High School Competition
A stimulated Congressional hearing will test nearly 100 high school students'
knowledge of government at the regional "We the People: The Citizen and
the Constitution" competition on Monday morning, Dec. 5, at the
Santa Clara County Office of Education.
"We the People" is the most extensive program in the U.S. designed
to educate students about the history and principles of the Constitution and
Bill of Rights. Winners of the federally funded competition will advance to the
state finals in February and may advance to national finals in Washington D.C.
Competing schools will be:
Irvington High School in Fremont – Cheryl Cook-Kallio,
Teacher-Coach
Monterey High School in Monterey – Alex Paterson, Teacher-Coach
Yerba Buena High School in San Jose – Maryann Haggerty,
Teacher-Coach.
According to David Walters, regional coordinator for "We the People" and
an Instructional Services coordinator for history and social science at the
SCCOE, students have spent months preparing "expert testimony" on
constitutional issues for the simulated hearing.
Judges will include representatives of the County Office of Education, the
Santa Clara County Bar Association, and the offices of Congressmen Sam Farr and
Mike Honda and Congresswomen Anna Eshoo and Zoe Lofgren, among others.
More details are available from David Walters at (408) 453-6859 or from the
Center for Civic Education, which administers the program nationally, at www.civiced.org.
