36th Annual Event Upcoming:

Santa Clara County’s Finest Teachers
Honored on Teacher Recognition Day

Thirty "Teachers of the Year" from Santa Clara County school districts will be applauded by colleagues and community leaders at the countywide 36th Annual Teacher Recognition Day - Awards Ceremony, Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. at the Heritage Theatre in Campbell.

Honorees were selected by their districts for the most prestigious local award given to classroom teachers. The recognition ceremony, presented by the Santa Clara County Office of Education, is the oldest and largest of its kind in California.

The 2005 honorees include teachers of every grade from kindergarten through high school, as well as special education and alternative school programs. Some have taught for as few as four years, others for as many as 38 years. Some of their accomplishments include:

  • Developing a Homework Center and a Parent Volunteer Program, and organizing parent education workshops to support literacy instruction (J. Sneed –4th & 5th Grades, Cambrian School District; see attached list);

  • Using assistive technologies to teach orthopedically impaired students, and engaging them in environmental and community service projects (L. Anido – Special Education, County Office of Education);

  • Individualizing lessons that take kindergarteners from “ready” to “reading” in months – in spite of lack of English skills, preschool or other experiences (F. Heller, Luther Burbank School District);

  • Providing counseling to at-risk seniors and designing coursework and an Exit Portfolio graduation requirement for students in continuation high school (J. Disario – Mt. View-Los Altos Union High School District);

  • Advancing English language mastery for second language learners through an Accelerated Literacy Program, coordinating a Young Authors Faire, and making “connection with students and families” her hallmark (P. Allan – 5th Grade, Mt. View-Whisman School District);

  • Building a middle school music program from a handful of interested kids to six choral and instrumental music groups involving more than 250 students (B. Golden – Sunnyvale School District).

  • Creating the first Academic Communication special education program of its kind to help high school students who find it difficult to develop everyday social skills (E. Rochin – Fremont Union High School District).

"These teachers epitomize excellence in classroom teaching," said Dr. Colleen Wilcox, County Superintendent of Schools. "Their skill, creativity and commitment to success for every student makes a real difference and inspires their students and colleagues alike."

The gala ceremony will be co-hosted by Superintendent Wilcox and by Leigh Weimers of the San Jose Mercury News. Honorees will be presented with engraved awards, entertained by student musicians, and featured in video profiles.

Teacher Recognition Day is co-sponsored by the SCCOE, Santa Clara County Federal Credit Union and National Semiconductor Foundation, with support from the San Jose Mercury News.

Additional support is given by American Musical Theatre of San Jose, the Computer History Museum, Office Depot and Pacesetter Awards, Paramount’s Great America, the Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT), Sixth District PTA, Santa Clara County School Boards Association, Cittisflorist.com and other organizations.
