SAN JOSE, CA – On August 2, the Santa Clara County Board of Education (SCCBOE) received $17,291 from the Silicon Valley Leadership Group to support the Santa Clara County Just Run Program.
"I am incredibly proud and happy to be able to present this check to help fund your Just Run program," said Chris Weiler, race manager for the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.
According to Weiler, the funds are from the Lam Research Heart and Soles Run that took place last March. This annual run/walk event is dedicated to helping local children engage in healthy activities on a daily basis, including exercise and making more nutritious food choices.
SCCBOE President Michael Chang, County Superintendent of Schools Jon R. Gundry and Sonia Gutierrez, Health and Wellness Supervisor at the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) helped receive the check during the SCCBOE meeting on August 2.
Gutierrez oversees Just Run in Santa Clara County, a web-based program where teachers can track student miles, and receive training, sports equipment, and materials to host health projects on their campuses. As an incentive, students are provided with rewards for each mile they run or walk. Eleven schools in Santa Clara County are currently participating in the Just Run program, and the program has tracked over 75,000 student miles run this year.
According to Gutierrez, the funds will be used to purchase physical education equipment and promote healthy eating through health fairs, "we are very grateful for their partnership."
