SAN JOSE, CA – On Saturday, May 20, Max Calehuff, an Adapted Physical Education Specialist with the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE), will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame – California Chapter, at Menlo College, in Atherton, CA.
Calehuff has spent the past 30 years at the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program at Oster School and many other special education programs, working with students from ages pre-school to 22 years. He enjoys working with individuals with special needs and gifted athletes.
For over 44 years, he has officiated wrestling events and will be honored for "a lifetime of service to wrestling" according to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame – California Chapter.
"The wrestling community has been like family to me, and I am deeply honored to receive this recognition." Says Calehuff. "I am grateful to have been able to stay on the mat for so long and thankful for the support I have been given."
He has officiated in California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Tournaments since 1984, five CIF State Championships, California Community College Championships, National College Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) tournaments, and Bay Area International meets.
Calehuff wrestled throughout his high school and college careers, coached and officiated in New Jersey and Florida, before relocating to California. As an athlete, Calehuff is both an NCAA Conference champion and a Collegiate All-American. At Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), he was selected Outstanding Athletic Performer of the Year in 1970-71, he was selected as the 167-pound member of the college Team of the Decade (1970-79), served as a captain of their undefeated Hall of Fame Team (1971-72) and inducted as an individual member of the Trenton State College Hall of Fame.
