CLASS TITLE: Technology Trainer
DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs highly responsible staff development functions related to end-user technology training, end-user technical support, and computer literacy assessment for employees of the County Office of Education and other external agencies. Employees in this classification receive limited supervision within a framework of technical policies and procedures. This job class requires advanced skills in course development, presentation, and problem solving as well as extensive knowledge of Macintosh microcomputers and desktop/laptop computers including operating systems, software applications, and peripheral devices.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS AMONG RELATED CLASSES
The class of Technology Trainer exercises responsibility for the assessment, development, and presentation of technology training modules and accurate and timely diagnosis and course of resolution for identified problems/malfunctions associated with Macintosh microcomputers and desktop/laptop computer hardware, software applications, and peripheral devices.
This class differs from the Applications Support Analyst in that incumbents of the ladder provide highly responsive end-user technical support, customer service, and training in business applications and financial systems. This class differs from the Staff Development Specialist in that incumbents of the ladder assess, develop, and present or facilitate the presentation of training modules that support the Office's quality improvement program and classified support staff.
ESSENTIAL TYPICAL DUTIES
Provides technology training at various county office and school district sites, in Macintosh microcomputer and desktop/laptop computer technologies and software applications
Develops and creates introductory, intermediate, advanced, and specialized course modules and supporting materials for office software applications including: word processing, database management, desktop publishing, spreadsheet, and graphics, and electronic mail
Assesses and evaluates employees' level of expertise in specific areas and determines appropriate levels of training to be provided
Promotes the department's software training programs and services through announcements and presentations to Office and school district employees
Conducts technology training and employee needs assessments, consulting with Office management, technology staff, and district administrators
Creates, prepares, and maintains training announcements, schedules, catalogs, reports, records, logs, and files in support of technology training programs and services
Collaborates with department staff to maintain accurate records on program development, consulting services, and costs for delivery of training program, presenting evaluation and other important data
Serves as a lead to other technology support staff, providing technical advice and guidance resolve technical problems, malfunctions, and end-user responses inquiries
Responds to end-user inquires and resolves technical problems and malfunctions, performing diagnostic tests, analyzing results, and determines appropriate course of action
Secures the services of and schedules presentations by consultants to provide advanced and/or highly technical instruction to targeted groups of employees
Advises end-users on preferred Local Area Network (LAN) configurations and system requirements; refers end-users to resources for additional assistance as needed
Performs related duties as required.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
Effective uses of new technologies such as web development, multimedia tools, courseware authoring tools, CD-ROM, and other instructional technology
Principles, practices, and methods of employee training, staff development, and instructional techniques and strategies
Operating systems, software applications, utility programs and peripheral equipment of power Macintosh microcomputers and desktop/laptop computers
Extensive troubleshooting techniques relating to Macintosh microcomputers and desktop/laptop computer operating systems and software programs, and an understanding of cross platform issues of applications software
Networking principles and requirements
Principles and methods of customer service and end-user support
Proper English usage including grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure
Ability to:
Become an expert on designated Macintosh computer, hardware, peripheral devices, software applications, vendor installed applications, and operating and utility programs
Expertly use office software applications including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheet, database management, desktop publishing, presentation, graphics, and electronic mail
Effectively operate various desktop and laptop computers, peripheral equipment, and utility programs
Successfully apply technical expertise and specialized knowledge to practical situations
Develop, design, and conduct clear and structured training courses for use of office software applications and products
Remain current with the advances of technology incorporating the most beneficial technologies to the County Office of Education
Respond to the staff development needs of employees with varying degrees of computer literacy and technical knowledge
Quickly identify and resolve computer-related problems through diagnosis of relevant information
Work independently with limited supervision and direct the work of others as assigned
Develop and recommend LAN configurations and installations
Effective communicate orally and in writing with large and small groups
Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with clients, staff and vendors.
Possession of:
A valid Class 3 California Driver's License with a driving record that meets the County Office of Education's insurance requirement.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Generally, any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical method of demonstrating these qualifications would be:
Possession of a Bachelor's degree with major coursework in computer science, information systems, technology, education or a related field, and;
Two years experience in the provision of desktop/laptop or Macintosh-based applications training including one year of providing responsible technical support in Macintosh computer peripheral devices, software applications, operating systems, and utility programs.
BARGAINING UNIT: Office, Technical, and Business Services (OTBS) Unit
WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties are performed in an office environment while sitting at a desk or at a desktop workstation to train office staff, make oral presentations, and attend meetings. Incumbents may be required to work a flexible schedule evening and weekend hours. Duties may be required regular driving to school sites within the County.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbents regularly stand and sit for long periods of time, walk short distances on a regular basis, use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard or other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, bend to assist employees in training, stoop or kneel or crouch to file speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate desktop computer; hear and understand voices over the telephone and in person; and move and transport program training materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
