SENIOR NETWORK ENGINEER
SUMMARY: Coordinates and supervises the day-to-day activities and operations of the network and technical support services unit; provides technical consultation and coordination services; diagnoses and resolves highly technical networking and related system problems; formulates new procedures; coordinates network software and hardware installations; supervises network support staff and activities; and performs all other related duties.
ACTIVITIES:
30% CONSULTATION AND COORDINATION
Interacts with Regional Technology Center staff, County Office of Education and District users on technical questions and systems requirements; Interacts with vendors; Participates in regional committees.
20% PROBLEM ANALYSIS
Conducts research and analyzes data to make recommendations on system and operational problems; recommends new procedures; and applies corrections and modifications to systems and applications software.
20% SYSTEMS INSTALLATION
Plans, designs, installs, and maintains local and wide area networks, and data/voice telecommunications operating systems and servers; recommends and selects system software and hardware; provides documentation for hardware and software facilities; researches, analyzes, plans, and develops hardware and software requirements; and selects, coordinates the installation of, and maintains appropriate systems software and hardware.
20% SUPERVISION
Selects, assigns work to, trains, monitors, coordinates, and evaluates support staff; develops training programs for employees.
10% RELATED ACTIVITIES
Performs all other related duties.
DECISION-MAKING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING: Diagnoses and resolves highly technical problems; recommends appropriate systems software and hardware; and coordinates network support staff assignments. Develops and implements short-term and long-term plans; provides data for long-term planning in own division; requires frequent exercise of discretionary judgment and specialized knowledge in interpreting and applying policies; situations are varied and sometimes highly complex; and participates in decisions that sometimes have major impact across Office branches.
REQUIRED MINIMUM SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of local area and wide area networking, telecommunications, and teleprocessing technologies; knowledge of network management principles, practices, operating systems and protocols including TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and AppleTalk; knowledge of routing protocols; knowledge in network security and firewalls; knowledge of Internet services including DNS, WWW, and FTP; knowledge of network servers, desktop computers and peripherals; skill in using complex terms of technology when coordinating and communicating recommendations; skill in training, explaining and directing a number of significant and complex situations; skill in planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling when supervising technical support activities and addressing system problems. Advanced skill in communicating both orally and in writing, with large and Senior Network Engineer small audiences; skill in collecting and assembling data, preparing reports, monitoring progress, and analyzing data; skill in budget preparation; ability to administer programs; skill in personnel management through coordination and cooperation; and skill in adapting style to divergent situations.
REQUIRED MINIMUM TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND LICENSING: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer sciences, information systems, or a related field; and a valid California driver's license. Certification as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) with a specialty in the Internet.
REQUIRED MINIMUM PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE: Five years job-related experience with demonstrated competence in computer network design and installation.
REQUIRED INTERACTION (NON-AUTHORITY): Contacts are somewhat unstructured and are frequently with high-level individuals inside and outside the work unit, such as program managers, vendors, business office staff, and district users and require planning, promoting, strategy development, decision-making, and problem-solving.
SUPERVISION: Directly supervises professional/specialist and other support staff.
