CLASS SERIES TITLE: Print Support Technician I/II (Alternate Class Series)
DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To operate high speed duplication and auxiliary equipment for the purpose of reproducing a variety of routine printed materials for the Santa Clara County Office of Education, programs, and school districts; to operate microfilm equipment; to assemble printed material and to distribute such materials to the appropriate office and departments. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a well-defined framework of policies and procedures. This job class series is responsible for the accurate and timely completion of all incoming work requests, orders, and special projects as well as the reproduction of a variety of routine printed material, duplication and bindery projects and for the safe and proper operation of duplication and bindery equipment. This job class series requires initiative in the scheduling of priorities to accomplish the timely completion of incoming work orders.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Print Support Technician I/II is an alternate class series requiring knowledge of duplicating equipment, must understand and follow both oral and written instructions, operate a variety of bindery/accessory equipment, effectively communicate in both oral and written form, establish and maintain a daily work schedule and meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties.
Print Support Technician I
Print Support Technician II: This is the experienced level classification of this alternate class series. This series requires a high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years experience operating bindery equipment.
ALTERNATE CLASS SERIES SPECIFICATIONS
Employees may be hired in the first or second class. Appointment to the second class requires two years experience operating bindery equipment experience. Employees initially hired in the entry class may reasonably expect to be reassigned to the experienced class after a period of two-years.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Receives and processes duplication requests and orders; processes required number of copies as requested
Operates duplication equipment including computer related duplicating equipment and high-speed copiers to copy a variety of materials for Santa Clara County Office of Education, school sites, and external agencies
Operates collating and binding equipment in the assembly of multi-page documents, and paper cutter to trim printed materials
Clips newspapers, magazine articles, and other external publications related to education for County Office newsletters, announcements, etc.
Delivers completed materials to appropriate departments
Checks film on microfilm reader to verify with original document
Operates a microfilm camera and related equipment
Maintains records of work orders and supply utilization
Proofs completed work to ensure accuracy and compliance with work requests/orders
Cleans and oils appropriate machine parts; makes minor equipment repairs as needed
May operate offset press equipment
Performs related duties as required.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
Paper stock and grade
General mechanical principles
Proper telephone techniques
Basic desktop computer operations and skills
Proper English usage including spelling, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure.
Ability to:
Learn to operate microfilm, bindery, duplication, and computer-related equipment
Perform arithmetical calculations accurately
Operate auxiliary equipment including collator, paper cutter, electric stapler, and padding press
Communicate effectively in both oral and written form
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
Establish and maintain a daily work schedule
Maintain records including microfilm records and to maintain production reports
Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Generally, any combination of education and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical method of demonstrating these qualifications would be:
Print Support Technician I: Twelfth grade with some experience with duplicating and bindery work preferred.
Print Support Technician II: Twelfth grade and at least two years of experience in duplicating and bindery work similar to that performed by the Print Support Technician I.
BARGAINING UNIT: Office, Technical, and Business Services (OTBS) Unit
WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties are performed indoors around noise and fumes from equipment operation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Mobility to stand, stoop, reach, and bend; mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; stand for extended periods of time; walk long distances; lifting, pushing, pulling which does not exceed 50 pounds and is an infrequent aspect of the job.
HAZARDS: Wear protective apparel including goggles, face protectors, aprons, shoes and oxygen breathing apparatus; work around moving mechanical parts; work around electrical current; and chemicals used in the printing process.
