CLASS TITLE: Print Services Technician
DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To operate an offset printing press and auxiliary equipment for the purpose of reproducing a variety of brochures, envelopes, newsletters, letterhead, instructional materials, flyers, manuals, etc. for the Santa Clara County Office of Education. Employees in the classification receive general supervision within a well-defined framework of policies and procedures. Employees in this classification operate offset presses and related auxiliary equipment and must possess knowledge of the procedures, method, and techniques used in offset printing and other duplication operations. This job class is responsible for the accurate and timely completion of printing projects and for the safe and proper operation of offset presses and related equipment. This job class requires initiative in the scheduling of priorities to accomplish the timely completion of incoming work orders.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS AMONG RELATED CLASSES
The Print Services Technician is responsible for the offset printing press and auxiliary equipment for reproducing a variety of materials. Employees in this class receive general supervision within a well-defined framework of policies and procedures. This class is distinguished from the Print Services Technician, Senior by the nature of lead duties assigned to the latter, and is considered to be the journey-level classification in the Print Services Technician series.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Operates an offset press and duplicators to print a variety of materials for the County Office programs, divisions, and school sites
Prepares machine for operation; cleaning rollers, choosing correct blanket for type of master to be used, adjusting machine for paper type and weight, adjusting flow of repellent solution and bringing ink to proper consistency
Receives orders for offset reproduction of brochures, envelopes, newsletters, letterhead, instructional materials, flyers, manuals, etc., and runs the required numbers of copies
Operates plate maker; cleaning and storing plates after use in appropriate storage areas
Carries and lifts assigned equipment, supplies, printed materials, and bulk paper in the performance of required duties

Prioritizes requested work orders; organizes work load and estimates amount of time necessary to complete assignments; refers scheduling conflicts/work overloads to appropriate sources as necessary
Strips, reduces, and enlarges negatives as needed for plate production
Cuts, collates, staples, binds, assembles, gathers, pads, and folds completed printed materials
Performs minor adjustments to offset printer(s) and auxiliary equipment; maintaining them in good working condition and requesting servicing when necessary
Justifies margins in the preparation of negatives and plates
Performs routine multicolor, masking, and layout work
Maintains production log for assigned projects/assignments
Operates bindery equipment in the assembly of multi-page documents as required
Operates desktop computer and related equipment in the course of assigned duties
May assist the Printing Services Technician, Senior in the operation of four (4) color processes
Performs related duties as required.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
Proper operation of offset press equipment and auxiliary equipment
Basic methods of adjusting assigned equipment for proper operation
Proper office procedures and practices
Types, qualities, weights, and uses of paper, inks, solvents, and various patented products made for use with offset press equipment
Desktop computer operations and skill to use word processing software
Proper English usage including spelling, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure.
Ability to:
Efficiently and safely operate and adjust offset press equipment
Strip, reduce, and enlarge negatives for plate production
Perform simple arithmetical calculations accurately
Operate auxiliary equipment including collator, paper cutter, electric stapler, padding press, master plate maker
Communicate effectively in both oral and written form
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
Establish and maintain a daily work schedule
Prepare and maintain routine records and production reports
Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Generally, any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical method of demonstrating these qualifications would be:
Completion of the twelfth grade; and
One year of experience with offset duplicating machines.
BARGAINING UNIT: Office, Technical, and Business Services (OTBS) Unit
WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties are performed indoors around noise and fumes from equipment operation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Mobility to stand, stoop, reach, and bend; mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; stand for extended periods of time; walk long distances; lifting, pushing, pulling which does not exceed 50 pounds and is an infrequent aspect of the job.
HAZARDS: Wear protective apparel including goggles, face protectors, aprons, shoes and oxygen breathing apparatus; work around moving mechanical parts; work around electrical current; and chemicals used in the printing process.
