JOB TITLE: Network Analyst

DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform technical support services of moderate difficulty for users of the County Office of Education and school districts; to provide hardware and software installation, configuration, maintenance, and upgrades; to repair computers, peripheral equipment, Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs); and to document technical and network related problems. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class requires certified skills and training related to computer hardware and software, Internet support, and local and wide area networks.

ALTERNATE CLASS SERIES

The classification of Network Analyst serves as an alternate class series with the classification of Network Technician. Employees may be hired into either level; however employees hired initially into the entry level classification of Network Technician may expect to be reasonably reassigned to the journey level classification of Network Analyst upon completion of a two year period incumbency and coursework in Internet network communications.

The County Office of Education may reduce the two year incumbency period with the approval of the Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources (Chief Hiring Authority).

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The classification of Network Analyst provides users with technical support services within the local and wide area network environment of the County Office of Education. Incumbents are journey level certified network administrators and are expected to be aware and utilize expert technical resources such as those provided by the Regional Technology Center, vendors, and other similar sources.

This classification is distinguished from the classifications of Network Enterprise Engineer and Telecommunications Analyst in that incumbents of these classifications provide technical support services for local and wide area network, teleprocessing, telecommunications, and data/voice communications systems, respectively, requiring higher skills, responsibility, and expertise.

This classification is distinguished from the classification of Microcomputer Support Specialist in that incumbents of this classification provide technical support service for microcomputers.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Provides technical support to users regarding hardware, software, and network related problems

Provides specialized user support services including the timely diagnosis and resolution of problems and malfunctions in computer applications

Researches and evaluates computer and network software and hardware to determine their utility

Installs, maintains, and repairs local and wide area networks

Monitors the various systems to ensure reliability and availability

Assists in optimizing computer and network performance

Identifies problem sources to resolve hardware and software failures and malfunctions

Documents problems relating to hardware, software, and networks, resolving them independently or referring them to appropriate staff or outside vendors as needed

Participates in training and retaining of users as required

Performs setup and installation of computers, network, peripherals, and applications software for users

Prepares hardware, software, and procedural documentation

Works cooperatively with other department staff in assisting and resolving user technical problems

Maintains current knowledge of technological advances in computers and peripheral equipment, software, operating systems and networks

Performs other related essential job functions as assigned.

establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING

Certification as a Microsoft Professional or similar equivalences for networks with supplemental training in Internet support, and possession of a valid Class 3 California driver's license with a driving record which meets the insurance requirements of the County Office of Education.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Generally, any combination of education and experience that could provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical method of demonstrating these requirements would be:

Education: An associate's degree in computer science, information systems, business administration, public administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Three years of directly related experience in the maintenance, installation, configuration, upgrades of hardware, software, and operating systems of microcomputers, and local and wide area networks.

Acceptable Substitutions: Additional years of directly related work experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year for year basis. There will be no substitute for the required certificate, supplemental training, or experience.
