JOB TITLE: Modified Migrant Education Instructional Aide
(3-Hour Position)

DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To assist a classroom teacher(s) in the instruction, supervision, and training of individual or groups of students involved in Migrant Education Programs, or Regional and to perform a variety of related duties in the maintenance of an effective learning environment for students. Employees in this classification receive direct to general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class provides responsible instructional assistance to assigned teachers/students in implementing the educational and social objectives of assigned program(s). This job class requires a high degree of positive contact with both students and instructional staff.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Assists teacher in individual and group instruction of K-12 grade students in various academic subjects for remediation and enrichment

Assists in supervising students to maintain effective learning environment, noting behavioral problems observed and applying approved disciplinary procedures

May communicate with parents/guardians regarding Parent Advisory Committee meetings, student activities, verifying absences and tardies and conveying permission slips, and attendance at extended-day tutorial centers

Assists teacher in correcting, grading, and recording tests, assignments, and homework papers for tutorial centers

Maintains student eligibility list, schedules new students for services, participates in orientation meetings, staff meetings, and staff development

Participates in the planning of and may make necessary arrangements for field trips and other program activities

Assists teacher in making referrals to other professionals when indicated

Assists teacher in the ongoing monitoring of K-12 student progress, working with or tutoring students, reviewing students' performance and discussing students' needs: participates with teachers after formal conferences; may make home visits in special circumstances

Watches for and recognizes potentially serious behavior patterns and reports them to appropriate personnel

Assists teacher in monitoring and evaluating student progress in assigned learning areas

Assists teacher supervising students during instructional, recreational, and meal time activities, enforcing established rules and standards and disciplining as needed

Prepares instructional aides and operates audio-visual equipment

Provides a variety of clerical support functions such as helping complete SAPNA, ILP's and student lists

Assists teacher in supervising students in classroom activities enforcing established rules/procedures and disciplining as needed

Assists in planning and assembling materials for classroom/instructional use

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

In addition to the ability to pass the County Office of Education High School Proficiency exam (reading, writing and arithmetic) the following knowledges, and abilities are required:

Knowledge of:

proper English usage, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation

effective child guidance practices and principles

students recreational activities involving sports, games, arts, and crafts

pertinent academic areas and learning situations

effective recordkeeping methods and techniques

first aid for minor injuries

Ability to:

understand and carry out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner

understand the needs of students in difficult circumstances and to effectively relate to these needs in a learning and/or recreational situation

analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action

effectively supervise students in a variety of situations

operate standard office/classroom equipment which may include typewriter, copy machine, tape recorders, projectors

maintain effectiveness in stressful situations

meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the required duties

establish and maintain cooperative and effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties

May require:

Bilingual and/or biliterate proficiency in a second language may be required for certain positions
