CLASS TITLE: Instructional Materials Technician
DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To provide responsible clerical and support services to a school site administrator in the receipt, organization, and maintenance of an instructional materials center. Employees in this job class receive general to limited supervision with a standard framework of policies and procedures. This job class provides responsible instructional materials assistance to assigned teachers and other staff in the implementation of educational program and/or unit objectives. This job class performs a variety of responsible independent clerical support in the operation, organization, and maintenance of an instructional materials center. This job class provides instructional aide assistance to students in an instructional environment.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Receives, organizes, and maintains materials and equipment in an instructional materials center including textbooks, audiovisual materials, instructional software, curriculum guides, supplies, video tape recorders, laminating, and other related equipment
Records and logs activities including the checking in/out and usage of instructional materials and equipment
Contacts book publishers, distributors, and suppliers regarding instructional material availability, shipping/receiving instructions, and discrepancies
Serves as a resource regarding references available; locates instructional materials; demonstrates the proper operation of equipment
Prepares and assembles instructional exercises and materials as needed or assigned
Responds to questions regarding the appropriateness and availability of instructional materials and equipment
Notifies teachers and other school staff of available textbooks, audiovisual materials, instructional software, and curriculum materials
Orients new teachers, school staff, and substitute personnel to the services, procedures, and activities of an instructional materials center
Supervises student assistants
Assists with development of instructional units
Maintains and prepares files, forms, and routine correspondence as assigned
May assist teachers in individual and group instruction of students in various learning situations including academic subjects and activities
May administer and score student examinations in such areas as achieved academic level, math, reading, writing and other related assessments as assigned
Performs related duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
Proper office methods and procedures including filing systems and storage
Proper English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary
Effective child guidance techniques
Pertinent academic areas and learning situations
Ability to:
Demonstrate sufficient basic skills (i.e., reading, writing, arithmetic, etc)
Organize, and maintain instructional materials and equipment
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions without immediate supervision
Perform a variety of secretarial/clerical assignments with speed and accuracy
Establish and maintain a variety of records, supplies and instructional materials
Communicate effectively in both oral and written form
Interact with court supervised or special needs students in a sensitive and positive manner
Operate standard office and classroom equipment that may include a microcomputer, typewriter, copier, and laminating machine
Learn the proper operation of audiovisual and other equipment used in an instructional materials center
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
BASIC SKILLS PROFICIENCY, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Generally, the required basic skills proficiency may be demonstrated by passing the County Office's proficiency examination or submitting a passing score of an equivalent proficiency examination administered by a California school district or community college. Possession of college degrees, professional certificates, and completed academic coursework in educationally related fields of study or disciplines may also be considered in satisfying this requirement.
Experience in the process and procedure of examination administration, scoring, and/or related assessment techniques used in student academic achievement or employment testing is preferred.
