CLASS TITLE: Education Outreach Specialist, AVID

DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinates, develops, and implements a wide variety of regionally-based outreach services for the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program, including tutor recruitment and selection plans, interagency partnerships, conducts or facilitates tutor training workshops, informational meetings and oversees other projects as assigned. This job class coordinates AVID program services, develops and implements regional outreach services, and participates in activities that support the goals of the AVID program. This job class requires considerable integrity, self-direction, initiative, and attention to detail as well as skill in interpersonal and public relations, and the ability to organize and focus on variety of tasks and projects simultaneously.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Prepares, implements, and oversees tutor recruitment plans; researches and identifies tutor funding sources; selects, assigns, supervises, and evaluates tutor coordinators

Plans, implements, and/or facilitates workshops for tutors, teachers, and administrators; and conducts AVID school site visits

Evaluates educational institutions, employers, and community resources to determine optimal external agency partnerships; collaborates and combines efforts with similar college preparatory programs; plans and participates in campus activities including presenting service learning courses

Establishes and maintains cooperative and collaborative work relationships with administrators, faculty, and teachers in the implementation and improvement of AVID tutorial services

Plans, develops, and coordinates activities that support the AVID Alumni Association

Develops tutor training materials, and conducts tutor training workshops that encourage the use of collaborative tutoring methods

Oversees special projects as assigned including web-enabled database development and website maintenance

Prepares, composes, edits, and distributes a variety of correspondence including, written reports, promotional materials, publications, handbooks, and grant proposals

Plans, develops, coordinates, and implements regionally-based outreach services, tutorial services, and specialized student enrichment activities in school sites of the AVID program

Attends, participates, and/or represents AVID at program meetings, advisory boards, and committees in universities, colleges, or middle/high schools

Participates in the program’s team effort to identify and resolve problems related to the access of higher education

Uses word processing, database, graphic, and spreadsheet software programs as well as standard office equipment and other peripheral devices

Assists in special projects related to resource and grant development

Performs related duties as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Possession of:

A valid Class 3 California Driver’s License

A driving record which meets the insurance requirements of the County Office of Education

Knowledge of:

Effective office principles, procedures, and practices including proper report writing, document construction and editorial enhancement techniques

Student enrichment needs of and tutorial methods for middle school and high school populations

Principles of training, leadership, facilitation, and management

Personal computer operations, peripheral devices, and software programs used for word processing, spreadsheets, web-enabled databases, web technology, and graphics

Proper English usage, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation

Knowledge of university student outreach and development, and other college preparatory programs is preferred

Ability to:

Read, comprehend, and interpret applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, statutes, and ordinances

Coordinate, plan, develop, and implement academic enrichment services, programs, and activities for the educationally disadvantaged and/or low-income students

Develop, prepare, and present AVID program information

Be sensitive to the needs of students of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds

Effectively communicate in both oral and written forms

Work variable hours including evenings and weekends with minimal supervision, driving to program school sites within the counties of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey

Select, train, assign, and oversee and evaluate student tutors and related services

Develop effective tutor recruitment and selection plans

Compose, prepare and edit correspondence, written reports, grant proposals, promotional materials, and publications with clarity and precision

Keyboard and/or type at a rate of speed that ensures the efficient completion of assigned duties

Operate standard office equipment including, but not limited to, a laptop/personal computer, fax machine, calculator, copier, and other peripheral equipment

Use work processing, graphic, database, web technology, spreadsheet, and other software programs

Establish and maintain a cooperative relationship with those contacted in the course of assigned duties.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Generally, any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical method of demonstrating these qualifications would be:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in education, public administration, or a related field, and;

• Three years experience in a university development, college preparation, or service learning program.

BARGAINING UNIT: Office, Technical, and Business Services (OTBS) Unit

WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties are performed in an office environment while sitting at a desk and at various program sites and in the community to make oral presentations and attend meetings. Incumbents may be required to work a flexible schedule evening and weekend hours. Duties require regular driving to current and potential program school sites within the counties of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbents regularly stand and sit for long periods of time, walk short distances on a regular basis, use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard or other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, stoop or kneel or crouch to file speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate desktop computer; hear and understand voices over the telephone and in person; and move and transport program materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
