JOB TITLE: Education Services Specialist
DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform specialized duties in support of the educational programs for
Alternative Schools Department and group homes; to provide staff training,
program consultation, and liaison work with schools to agencies operating group
homes and residential centers in the county. Employees in this classification
receive limited supervision within a framework of standard policies and
procedures. This job class exercises responsibility for providing specialized
assistance, support, and training to schools, group homes, and staff regarding
the establishment of effective educational programs for their residents.
TYPICAL DUTIES
- Performs specialized assistance and support functions related to the
education programs of group homes and their residents
- Confers with group home staff including directors, counselors, social
workers, and house parents regarding existing and future educational support
programs and activities for residents
- Assists in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of group home
educational programs and identifies areas for improvement
- Attends and facilitates meetings with group home staff to identify the
unmet education needs of their residents and to develop plans for action
- Assists in the development of workshops and training modules for group
home staff
- Conducts on-site workshops and training sessions for group homes
- Assists in coordinating the volunteer tutor exchange program
- Recruits volunteer tutors from colleges and within the local community
- May direct and coordinate the activities of volunteer tutors
- Serves as liaison between group homes and schools regarding educational
programs
- Assists in planning and implementing procedures and programs for tutorial
services
- Acts as information source to Group Home Tutor/Liaison staff and volunteer
tutors
- Assists in the development of the tutorial resource library and assess
community resources with respect to tutorial services
- Prepares surveys to gather information related to group home operations
and educational programs and assists in evaluating survey results
- Attends a variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars to increase
awareness of tutorial/learning resources, programs, activities, and
materials
- Prepares a variety of reports and correspondence related to assigned
functions
- Performs related duties as required
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
- proper English usage, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation
- departmental policies, procedures, standards, and requirements related to
tutorial/learning assistance programs
- the general needs and behavior associated with group home students
- the general operations of group home systems
- achievement test administration, scoring, and evaluation
Ability to:
- communicate effectively and tactfully in both oral and written form
establish and maintain accurate records and files
- accurately assess staff training needs and develop learning/training
activities/materials to increase effectiveness
- quickly identify problem areas or situations, evaluate problem causes, and
take appropriate action to resolve problems identified
- operate standard office equipment and machines such as typewriter, copier,
calculator
- perform assigned duties independently without immediate supervision
- prepare reports and correspondence
- exercise tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity to changing situations and needs
- establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted
in the performance of required duties
Generally, the required knowledges and abilities will have been acquired
during at least two years of clerical experience or general experience working
with and relating to teenagers in a structured environment.
