CLASS TITLE: Teacher Assistant II
DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To assist teacher(s) in the supervision and care of young children in the Child Development Center and State Preschool programs. Employees in this classification receive direct or general supervision from a center teacher and work on a day to day basis within the framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class provides assistance to children who are primarily preschool/kindergarten age in implementing program objectives and providing responsible day care.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Assists teacher in classroom routines
Assists in food service:
- Receive and set up food meals
- Maintain a clean environment for food service area
- Wash dishes and pans
Assists the teacher to work with individuals and groups of children
Assists in supervising of children in indoor and outdoor activities
Assists teacher in maintaining a clean and orderly classroom environment
Assists children in bathroom procedures
Participates with teacher in home visits
Assists with the implementation of emergency procedures and first aid
Attends meetings and in-services
Record keeping and order supplies
Assists with health and child development procedures
Assists the teacher in maintaining a safe physical environment
Aids Teacher in attending to student needs and ensuring students safety on field trips
Assists teacher in gathering student observation and assessment information
Assists teachers in carrying out instructional activities including social cognitive, physical, creative and language development
May provide input to assist teacher with preparation of lesson plans
Orients substitute teachers/assistants in following established classroom routine/procedures in order to meet individual student needs
Performs related duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
Effective child guidance practices and principles
General areas of child growth and development or human growth and development; children, families and communities; and program/curriculum used in early childhood education.
Ability to:
Obtain a Child Development Associate Teacher Permit
Assist with indoor and outdoor recreational activities suitable for children of preschool/kindergarten age
Communicate with young children, parents, and staff
Complete federally mandated training requirements required for licensing by the State Department of Social Services
Learn effective and appropriate techniques and practices utilized in preschool education
Read, write, and speak English at a level sufficient for successful job performance
Effectively supervise a group of children in varying activities
Effectively understand and follow written and oral instructions
Effectively communicate and relate to preschool/kindergarten children in a positive and sensitive manner
Maintain effectiveness in a stressful situation
Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the assigned duties safely and effectively
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
Participate in and complete federally mandated training requirements required for licensing by the State Department of Social Services
Analyze situations accurately and recommend an effective course of action
Apply appropriate first aid procedures and minor injuries
Construct charts and other learning aids appropriate for preschool children.
Requirements:
Possession of or be eligible for a Child Development Associate Teacher Permit
2 years experience necessary
Must be 18 years of age
May require:
Bilingual/bicultural proficiency English and second language as specified by the County Office.
BARGAINING UNIT: Aides Unit
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Indoor, classroom and outdoor settings. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Hearing and speaking information in person and on the telephone; seeing to read, prepare and proofread documents, perform assigned duties; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, to retrieve and store files and supplies, lifting light objects.
