Graduation and Celebration
There wasn't a dry eye to be seen in the multi-purpose room at the Cathedral
of Faith on June 21.
That's when each member of the 2007 graduating class of the Alternative
Schools Department of the Santa Clara County Office of Education presented a
yellow rose to his or her hero--someone who made this day possible for them.

Forty-six students-- from the county office Community Schools, Community Day
Schools, Group Homes and Probation Ranches-- participated in the ceremony.
"Our students have overcome significant challenges to make it to this Graduation
Day," said Alternative Schools Director Paula Mitchell. "This makes
us doubly proud of them this evening."
The Color Guard from the Alternative Placement Academy Community Day School
presented the colors. Three student speakers addressed their past (the
challenges that brought them to alternative schools); their present (the support
that they have received); and their future (what this high school diploma means
to them).
Sandra Juarez challenged her fellow graduates to make this night the
beginning of a road to future opportunities and success. Assistant
Superintendent, Joe Fimiani delivered the keynote address, offering accolades to
the students for their outstanding work.
The Tzu Chi Foundation was honored for their collaborative work in the
Community Schools and students cheered as Deputy Sheriff Bonsall was recognized
for five years of outstanding service as he leaves the Alternative Schools for a
new assignment.
"This was the largest graduating class in over fifteen years at the county
office," Fimiani said. "With the state requirement that students must pass the
California High School Exit Exam before graduating, this is a remarkable
accomplishment and a wonderful celebration of our students."
