Local Students' Science Honors
Six students from Santa Clara County public high schools won top awards May 12 at
the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Indianapolis.
Terik Daly, 16, Oak Grove: Terik's project investigating the chemical
signatures of meteorite impacts received the Intel science fair best-of-category
award, with a $5,000 prize, and the first-place grand award in space science,
which carries a $3,000 prize.
Stephanie Jinyu Yaung, 18, Leland: Stephanie was awarded a first place by
Agilent Technologies, and a summer internship valued at $5,000, for a project
involving hematopoietic stem cells.
Anjaney Pramod Kottapalli, 16, Lynbrook: High School; Anjaney's
experimental analysis of the thrust produced by an ornithopter at low Reynolds
numbers won a $1,500 second-place grand award in engineering .
Three students from Monta Vista -- George Chen, Frank Chuang and Victor Shia,
all 17 -- won a grand award for developing a new encryption algorithm for
protecting sensitive data, and an all-expenses-paid trip to the International
Youth Science Exhibition in Spain.
